Fix a noisy radiator

Save £50–80 in 30 mins — no heating engineer needed

Most people call a heating engineer for this. You probably don't need to.

Last updated: March 2025

Only basic tools needed — most homes already have them.

Before you start

Most radiator noises are caused by one of four things: trapped air (gurgling), thermal expansion (ticking), water hammer (banging), or a worn valve (hissing). Listen carefully to identify which type of noise you have — the fix is different for each.

Some ticking when the heating first comes on is completely normal — metal expanding as it heats. The noise should stop once the system reaches temperature.

Identify the noise type

Different noises indicate different faults. Gurgling or bubbling = trapped air (bleed the radiator). Banging or hammering = water hammer from pressure surges (lower boiler pressure). Ticking or clicking = normal thermal expansion, but loud ticking may mean pipe brackets need adjustment. Hissing = valve leak.

Most people get this done in under 5 minutes.

Where beginners go wrong

Immediately bleeding a banging radiator — banging is usually water hammer from pressure, not air. Check the pressure gauge first.

Over-tightening a hissing valve packing nut — too tight and the valve handle won't turn. Half a turn at a time is enough.

Accepting loud noise as normal — sustained banging or gurgling that never stops indicates an ongoing fault that will worsen over time.

Stop and call a heating engineer if...

The noise is coming from inside the boiler itself (not the radiators or pipes)

A valve is leaking water visibly and tightening has not helped

Loud banging persists after adjusting boiler pressure — may indicate pump failure

What you just learned

You can now diagnose radiator noise by type and apply the correct fix. Understanding what your heating system sounds like when it is working correctly makes future problems easy to identify early.

Most people would pay a tradesperson for this.
